Lead Guitarist to Beyonce, Health Food Entrepeneur & Yoga Master – Bibi McGill

OctCoverBibi McGill is an inspirational woman if ever we saw one; a yoga instructor, wellness educator, and health food entrepreneur, not to mention a sensational lead guitarist currently working with Beyoncé having previously worked with artists such as Pink. Bibi also acts and models but the main focus of our conversation will be on her Yoga, her passion for music, and her expanding Kale Chip business as well as delving into what has motivated and inspired her to be so successful in so many areas. You cannot miss Bibi when she enters a room with her amazing afro and her famously tattooed body, and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to get to know her better!

There are so many aspects to you and your life. I’m intrigued about what a typical day looks like in the life of Bibi?

It all depends on the day. Like energy, my life is constantly changing. Change is the only thing that is constant. If I’m on tour, I do my best to wake up and find a yoga class somewhere. If that isn’t possible, I at least try and get out and experience some type of natural environment: a park, forest, river, hike, bike ride in the sun. Then it’s time to get ready and go to the venue I’m performing at. We usually have a sound check and then I have to keep myself busy from around 5pm till 8pm. Then it’s time to get changed and ready for the stage. We perform a 2 hour show and then it’s back to the hotel or on the tour bus to do the same thing all over again. On tour I get few days off and have to make the time to navigate my Kale Chip company back at home in Portland. If not on tour, I love to get up early, go to yoga class, fix a nice fresh juice and then do a variety of things that nurture my soul. Maybe go for a hike, kayaking, work in my garden, take my dog to the park, go to the hot springs, camp for the weekend, have tea or lunch with a friend, play with essential oils and crystals, spend time in Kauai or do absolutely nothing at all.

Who or what inspires you to keep creating goals for yourself?

I AM inspiration. Inspiration is all around and within us if we will only be aware, be present and Be it. When I have ideas that fuel my passion, I contemplate how important it is to me, how much effort and energy it will take to manifest. From there I either follow it through with a plan of action or, let it go and keep my life simple. Bottom line is, I’m inspired to share things I enjoy that help me cultivate peace, love and happiness with others.

Yoga is important to you. What brought Yoga into your life?

I was always curious about what yoga was. I finally took a class and walked out of it knowing yoga would always be a priority in my life. Yoga made me feel a flow, peace, calm and balance that I had never known before.

How often do you practice Yoga? Is it easy to do this when you are on the road?

It varies. I like to practice at least 3 times a week. Often I practice 6 times a week. Sometimes not at all if that’s what I need. I’m very dedicated and consistent but sometimes I need to not do anything, so that’s what I do to take care of myself. Everyone is different and should listen to their own intuition. This isn’t to say be lazy or irresponsible.

What is wellness?

Wellness is continually educating yourself spiritually, physically, emotionally and mentally with healthy lifestyle options and then incorporating what is in alignment for you into your life. This also means maintaining healthy physical and energetic boundaries. The latter is just as important but often gets ignored.

Is it possible for people to find peace and love with the knowledge of specific meditation tools? Any quick examples you could share right now?

We are LOVE. We don’t need to find it. We just need to remember it and BE it. Meditation doesn’t have to be some difficult practice to obtain. Just sit down and be quiet and don’t think or worry about anything for 5 minutes a day, while you focus on your breath.Increase the time as you feel needed. Don’t judge yourself and your process. Certainly love, oneness, peace, self awareness and an abundance of many other things can be experience through meditation.

Let’s talk about music. How long have you been playing the guitar? What part of you is your music an expression of?

I started playing guitar when I was 12 years old. I played in bands all throughout high school and college. I graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelors Degree in Music Scoring and Arranging. Moved to California shortly after that and worked for many years before I had the opportunity to play with Pink. I toured with two really big Latin artists and then took almost a year off to teach yoga. Then Beyonce’s people called. My guitar playing is really just an expression of my entire Being, my Spirit, mind and emotions. My guitar is the vehicle I use to channel the Light. I just get out of the way. Life on the road is bitter sweet. It’s wonderful to do what you love and travel all over the world to places people only dream of visiting different cultures of people who appreciate your gift and talent. It’s extremely taxing on the mind, body and emotions. I don’t mind being in hotels at all but it’s difficult being away from my home, my dog, my lifestyle and all things familiar for long periods of time. It’s something you really have to learn how to balance if you’re going to do it for a long time. I have to really take care of myself on and off the road. It’s a task to find yoga and good food or a juice/smoothie bar, but I make sure that I do it or else I can feel myself becoming inbalanced.

Speaking of everyday life, you have added Kale Chip Alchemist to the list of projects that you manage. For those that do not know, can you describe the Bibi Kale Chip taste and the benefits of making chips (or crisps as they are called in the UK) from this green leafy vegetable?

Kale is one of the most nutrient dense vegetables on the planet. I’ve created a recipe that is quite addictive. People who don’t like heath food love Bibi KALE Chips. I get parents telling me all the time that their teenagers who only eat junk food want BKC in their lunch everyday. My kale chips definitely have a lot of flavor. It must be the garlic, salt and hot spicy peppers. My slogan is: “Kale with a Kick, Packed with a Punch”.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hmmmm? I really to try to stay present. I have enough to think about today…right now!!!! I see myself retiring from touring in the next few years. I will always play music but I will do it more for pleasure as a hobbie and not for a living. I intend for BKC to take off and allow me the freedom and capitol to start on other super food product lines so that I will be able to offer more high vibrational foods to the world. I definitely want to slow things down quite a bit and live where there is a lot of land and space. I like to be close to nature and living sustainably. I want to travel and experience the world more at my own pace. I want to practice and teach more yoga. I want to study and learn more. I’m not really sure… I’ll take it all one day at a time.

Shingi Munda is a full time mum of two boys and a girl. Having recently had the second boy and being given time away from her current role as a Support Worker for Homeless individuals within the local area, Shingi has had more time to explore ideas that inspire her personal journey towards enlightenment. Visions of running her own events management company surrounded by music which she loves and a photography business idea are currently being put to paper and Shingi aims to do more of the things she loves while at the same time, helping other people out as much as possible. A background in Teaching English and fuelled by her degree in English Language and Linguistics have also sparked a journalistic interest in Shingi during her current free time and she is glad to be called upon to utilise these skills further and gain more personal growth. Shingi knows that life is a ride of ups and downs and she is strapped in, holding on tight, and learning to enjoy what she has created for herself: challenges, laughs, loves, and adventures.
