Inspired Artist – Charlene Maguire
When/how did you get started as an artist?
I was born with it intact! From the time I can remember holding a crayon it was my first mode of self expression…through pictures.
What mediums do you work in?
My main ones are acrylic paint, collage elements, and digital. Sometimes a combination of all three. I love to experiment whenever I can though…it’s always exciting to try something different and see what happens.
What drives you to create your art?
A few things. Since early on my art has been the one way I could express myself easily….it’s been my expression, my healing, my love, and a way for me to connect with the world. I’ve always felt like a bit of an alien, so connection was easier through lines, color, and shapes. I haven’t always found it easy to talk about my art…or myself…that has taken me a while to cultivate 🙂
Can you tell us a little bit about your process when creating art?
My process is that the work creates itself. It’s like a divine download. I get ideas, then I’ll start drawing, sketching, gluing, or painting right away, and honestly the piece takes on a life of it’s own. I ask questions as I’m going along…”what color would you like here?”…and then I get an answer. I have no set way to start, it’s whatever the piece calls for. Right now I’m developing a style that includes a lot of linework along with drooling and spattering of paint, and I’m really enjoying the energy of it. I also have a series called The Urban Garden, which is a combination of acrylic paint and collage elements, (flowers, leaves, etc) which are a way to create a fanciful garden on your wall.
Do you have any particular inspirations for your art?
I can be inspired by anything and everything….the magic of life is endless!
How important do you think it is to express yourself in this way? What are the benefits?
For me, it’s very important. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the corporate world working as a graphic designer, and as much as I do enjoy that, too much time on the computer making things that have no connection to my soul makes me feel hollow. As much as I do love working digitally, there is also something about getting messy with paint, clay, glue, and whatever else, that just satisfies a visceral need to connect to oneself and the earth.
