Astral Projection/Out-of-Body Experiences – An Introduction

I am often asked to explain, with a clear and precise definition, what astral projection actually is. If you google the term though you will find different explanations, so I tend to steer clear instead encouraging people to experience it, so they can decide for themselves.

Put very simply astral projection is focusing consciousness away from the physical body and into the astral body, though there are people who use the term more generally to include other types of projections. Sometimes the term out-of-body experience is used; again, google this and you will find various perspectives.

I prefer not to spend too much time focused on what it is and more time focusing on the benefits of these types of experiences; what they can show us about ourselves; how can we use this skill to evolve, both to help others and to contribute to the evolution of humanity.

Having these types of experiences opens your mind in such a way that you no longer look at your life, the world and the universe in the same way ever again. After my first conscious out-of-body experience, I was ecstatic. I wanted to shout from the rooftops, but I didn’t – I kept it too myself for fear of being carted off by the men in white coats. I didn’t think I was crazy, though the people around me may well have done. This was back in the year 2000, and in those days, there wasn’t Facebook or many computer forums around, however I managed to find one book in my local bookshop by William Buhlman, ‘Adventures Beyond the Body’.

My first experience filled me with joy. It was very simple, and I didn’t even leave my bedroom. I remember floating above my physical body feeling totally free and it was fantastic. After the first time I kept at it, I was afraid that it may have been a one off, but the experiences just kept coming at a rate of about two or three a week and I realised I had just started an incredible journey into self.

Journeys, of course, involve many things and are not always full of joy and laughter. When you begin this adventure into self, you may meet the positive as well as the negative. Just as in this physical world there is what we define as ‘good and bad’, so it is in the astral; as above so below. I always recommend people prepare themselves for what may happen whilst keeping an open mind. No one can tell you exactly what it will be like for you but there are certain aspects which are very useful to be aware of.

The most important feature of the astral world is that like attracts like. The astral is thought and feeling sensitive, so if you are afraid you may get your fear reflected back at you. This may be in the form of something you find frightening, for example if you have a phobia about spiders and you feel fear, then a big spider may manifest in front of you. For this reason, state of mind and emotional stability are essential to avoid more negative experiences. Enter the astral with a light heart, focused in joy.

I feel preparation is necessary when attempting astral projection/out-of-body experiences to avoid unnecessary ‘upsets’ as some things in the astral can appear terrifying when in fact they are quite normal. I give you an example of one of my early exits. I was flying around outside my house, suddenly I heard drumming, it was quite dark, and the combination of the drums and darkness started to make me feel uneasy. The more nervous I felt the faster the drum beat became. I then started to see movement in the distance, little men were coming towards me, getting closer and closer, the drums became louder and louder. Well it totally freaked me out and I instantly went back to my body desperate to wake up. Once awake in my bed I started laughing as I realised what the drumming was, it was the sound of my own heart beating. I had allowed this to cut short a perfectly normal experience because I had let my emotions take over.

If I had remained calm and objective I wouldn’t have ruined that exit. However, most projections have an element of learning in them and through this I learned to not let emotions take over during an experience – though this is not always easy as we are so used to identifying with how we feel. When projecting we must learn to step out of our emotions; sometimes good advice for physical life too in certain situations, being aware of how we feel can only help us on our journeys.

To sum up this week’s article, preparation is the key word. Expanding your consciousness in this way is not to be taken lightly; it is a commitment, you are saying to your guides, ‘Yes, I’m ready to discover who I am.’ We all have our shadows to work through and in the astral you get to meet them head on. It is a great way to evolve, to blow away the cobwebs of your life as well as other incarnations. It is an adventure, but with all adventures there are rivers, hills and mountains to cross so be prepared but have fun with it too, for as well as all the learning and evolving our guides do generally have a wonderful sense of humour.

Thank you for spending time with me today,

Happy travels!

My name is Alison Wylie. I am English but I live in Italy, I often use the name Ali Wings, 'ali' in Italian means 'wings' so rather appropriate considering how I love to fly at night in my dreams and out-of-body experiences.
Around the year 2000 I had my first out-of-body experience, it was the first of thousands, and the beginning of an incredible journey into self. Taking the inner path is not always easy and I had a lot of intense experiences confronting many parts of myself which I never imagined existed.
Through my out-of-body experiences I have experienced how we are so much more than we could ever conceive with our human brains. I have understood on a very deep level how everything and everyone is connected and now I wish to help people connect to who they truly are.
I have met people on the other side who have died full of regrets for not having lived fully while on Earth, for not having given all of themselves but instead getting lost in the drama and 'busyness' of physical life. I wish to help people balance their lives and really start to live, to live life consciously. I am a podcaster and run three podcasts, the Astral Projection Podcast, the Connecting the Bits Podcast plus an Italian podcast named Mente Corpo Spirito such is my desire to reach the world with my message.
I am an Author, Teacher, Astral Projection Coach, Reiki Practioner Level 2 and Spiritual Advisor helping people to become their own hero and live life consciously.

  1. Interesting article, I had a few experiences shortly after my Mum passed over when I would meet with her but could never ‘make’ it happen. This was back in 1977 and it has never happened since so I loook forward to reading your future articles.
